The Ideas
Idea 1: Our first idea was to create a playground that would pump water from underground reserves to a well in a town. This would ensure that the water was clean because it has been proven that the natural water reserves that are underground in places affected by this problem, such as Africa, contain clean water. It would make the water portable, because it would be pumped into a well that would be centrally located in the town. It also satisfied our last two requirements. However, we ran into a problem when we realized that playgrounds similar to ours already exist.
Idea 2: Our second idea was to create a playground that would create the same type of playground, however, the water would be stored indefinitely, as opposed to our first idea, where the water would really only be a viable resource fairly immediately. However, with this idea, we ran into the same problem as the first idea, because both the playground and the storage technology already existed.
Final Idea: We condensed the playground and decided to combine the technology into a ball. This will be close to the size of a soccer ball. Our goal is to make the ball have a filter and also make it portable. The filter would satisfy our requirement for making the water clean and drinkable. It would also make the water more transportable, because the ball could be rolled, instead of carried. Our goal is also to make the ball out of a very durable material, that would also be fairly inexpensive. Finally, the water would be filtered as the ball rolls or is kicked, so it would help with our goal of making the solution an item that would provide entertainment for children. The water would be filtered as it is being used to play a soccer game.
